Summer Wind

I have to admit something. Summer is my least favorite season. What?! I know. I’m just horrible. But, honestly, it is just too hot out to enjoy being outside. I hate wearing shorts. I hate sweating. I hate frizzy hair and worrying about skin cancer (I know, I know, you can get it at any time of year but it’s a higher risk in the summer). Even the fact that my birthday is smack-dab in the middle of summer hasn’t changed how I feel about the season.

BUT. Just because I don’t like summer doesn’t mean that I didn’t have good things happen.

ROLLERDERBS.jpg

I played roller derby. I just finished out my second season and REALLY grew this year as a skater. I was mainly a jammer, which is something that I didn’t think I’d build up the gumption to do. I traveled to Springfield and Iowa to play and got better and better with each bout.

I went to Memphis/NOLA. And gained like ten pounds from all the delicious food I ate. I went to the beach, ate lots of good food, toured cemeteries, laughed way too much, drank way too much, and went to a Voodoo museum!

I went on a wonderful weekend trip to northern Wisconsin and stayed in a teammates awesome cabin. Again, drank way too much and really bonded with some of my awesome teammates. We jumped on the lake trampoline, canoed, skated to a super cute diner, laughed a whole ton, cooked, visited an awesome glass-blowing studio, drank mead, and made s’mores by a campfire.

I went to Mole de Mayo and had an awesome Memorial Day weekend. I guess my huge highlights involve lots of drinking, staying up all night, and eating all the things.

I grew a garden! And it was pretty successful! The only thing I couldn't grow were cucumbers. This first garden I grew eggplant, swiss chard, lacinato kale, lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers (green, red, and yellow), jalapenos, garden salsa peppers, and poblanos. It was a little much for one person and I definitely plan on scaling back next summer.

So summer can’t be all that bad. I will say this was the first summer that I truly enjoyed in a long time. I think a lot of that has to do with finding roller derby. I finally have a group that I truly belong in that doesn’t house all this drama for me. And the sport in general has done so much for me in terms of strength and confidence.

Now, on to my favorite season of them all. Fall. I know, I’m really basic.

xoxo.
